Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement®

Move and feel better in ways you forgot were possible! The Feldenkrais Method  improves movement. These gentle and fascinating lessons are an alternative to pain, stiffness and restrictive movement.  Come join us for an afternoon filled with pleasant surprises.

The free class is taught by Rich Manuccia, Guild Certified Feldenkrais Teachercm on Monday, May 19, 2008 from 2 to 3:30 pm in the Community Resource Room at The Center, 3909 Centre Street.

Please bring a yoga mat or towel to lie on.

Groups

Needlecraft Group 

Learn embroidery, silk-ribbon embroidery, beading and felt craft with instructor Helene Goodman.

The group meets every Saturday from 4-5:30 pm. at The Center, 3909 Centre Street. Craft supplies will be provided at the meeting.


Reading Group Book Club

Music Appreciation

Join host Alan DesRoches for this month's class, which continues tracing the Nationalist movement with Grieg from Norway and Sibelius from Finland.

This very popular group meets next on Tuesday, May 13 from 2-3 pm in the auditorium at The Center, 3909 Centre Street.  


Transgender Focus Group

All those interested are encouraged to join the Transgender focus group.  The goal of the focus group is to increase transgender participation in 50 and Better Club activities. 

The group meets Thursday, May 7 from  2-3 pm in the Community Resource Room of The San Center, 3909 Centre Street.


Adult Day Services Focus Group

The focus group will meet on Thursday, May 15, 2008 from 12 noon to 1 pm in Group Room 2 at The Center, 3909 Centre Street.  

The Adult Day Services Focus Group meets the third Thursday of each month to explore options for caregiving and our community. 


Introduction to Meditation

Please join this very popular group Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 2-3 pm in Latino Services at The Center, 3909 Centre Street.

The Introduction to Meditation group will also meet on Saturday, May 10, May 17 and May 31 from 2-3 pm. 


Art Group

Would you like to learn basic figure drawing and painting? Would you like to try your hand at a portrait, abstract or still-life? Join others 50 and Better in this multimedia art group and use pencil, pastel, watercolor and more to express yourself! No previous art experience necessary. The group is free, although some basic materials may need to be purchased. 

Join Sabato Fiorello on Wednesdays at 1:30 pm. You may join in at any time during the session, but we take a one week break between 8 week sessions, so call first at (619) 692-2077.


Gentle Yoga
The Center and Silver Age Yoga Community Outreach (SAYCO) present Gentle Yoga. Classes are free and all are welcome. The class is taught by GLMBATM, RYT, Certified Yoga Therapist and Instructor, Certified SAYCO Instructor. You may reach her at (619) 890-YOGA with questions. If you have friends under 50 that could benefit from this class please bring them - they are welcome to attend.

Gentle Yoga meets each Thursday at 2:45 pm.

Tai Chi

F.O.G.  (Fellowship of Older Gays)

F.O.G. is a social organization for older gay men in San Diego. Members meet for a coffee social every Tuesday and Saturday morning at 10 am at The Open Air Cafe, 1816 Howard Avenue.

The discussion group meets every Tuesday, 6:30-8 pm at The Center, 3909 Centre Street.

FOG Movie Night is the first Friday of the Month at 7 pm in the Community Resource Room at The Center.

Support Groups

New Men's Group

The Center's Behavioral Health Services is offering a new men's group focusing on health and sexuality.  This free group will be a great place to talk openly with other men about their experiences, how to talk about safety, sex and building relationships. 

The group meets Mondays from 7 pm to 8:30 pm at Behavioral Health Services 2313 El Cajon Boulevard. Call (619) 260-6380, ext. 105, to learn more.


You Are Not Alone: Cancer Support Group for Women

"You Are Not Alone" is available for women with any type of cancer.  The group meets the first and third Wednesdays of each month from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at The Center's Health Services, 2313 El Cajon Blvd.  This is an ongoing, committed group, not a drop-in group.  "You Are Not Alone" is generously sponsored by a grant from the BCause (Breast Cancer Alliance United to Support and Educate) Fund of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation.

Drop-in Support Group for Men 

The Monthly Drop-in Support Group for Men is an open forum for discussion of life's challenge that meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month, 12-1:30 pm in Group Room 3 at The Center, 3909 Center Street.


Drop-in Support Group for Women

The Monthly Drop-in Support Group for Women is an opportunity to share with new friends and an open forum for discussion of life's challenges. It meets on the 2nd Fiday of each month, 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in Group Room 3 at The Center, 3909 Centre Street. 


Family and Friends Caregiver Group
This group is for women whose partners, family members or friends are living with cancer. It meets the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 6 pm to 7:30 pm and there is a $30 fee.
This is not a drop-in group.  To participate, you must first complete an intake assessment.  Contact Information and Referral at (619) 260-6380 to schedule an intake.

Here you can use a computer with  Internet access or take a look at the senior resources binder where you can find contact information for every type of helpful organization,  from housing, to legal, to employment resources. Aging As Ourselves

Aging as OurselvesDo you or anyone you know need resources for housing, food, home-delivered meals, home visitors, in-home help, transportation, counseling, legal services, tax prep and health? There is a lot of help for you!

Aging As Ourselves

We are happy to announce this exciting community project and proud to say that The Center's Senior Services is a part of it!

Aging as Ourselves is a community-wide collaborative that provides a safe and comfortable environment for LGBT seniors to tap into culturally responsive legal, social and health-related services.

The easiest way to connect to these resources is by calling Renee at ElderHelp, (619) 284-9281, ext. 15.

The San Diego LGBT Community Center will provide individual mental health counseling and seminars, referrals to health and social services, and access to legal seminars and legal counseling. In addition, seniors will be reached through social, cultural and skill-based activities as well as support and discussion groups. ElderHelp will: direct the Aging as Ourselves project; provide case management and referrals to health and social services for LGBT seniors; assist with volunteer recruitment and training; provide space for free legal counseling; and develop and conduct health provider educational trainings and seminars. Seniors Active in a Gay Environment (S.A.G.E.) will work with ElderHelp to recruit and train volunteers to provide culturally sensitive, non-medical, in-home supportive services to LGBT seniors. In addition, S.A.G.E. will sponsor an Alcoholics Anonymous group, a Prostate Cancer Support Group for men, provide space for free legal advice and provide health and social services for LGBT seniors. Family Health Centers of San Diego will develop and implement an HIV/AIDS social marketing campaign targeted towards LGBT seniors to increase awareness of STD risk factors and safer sex practices, as well as to encourage STD testing. Elder Law & Advocacy will provide free legal assistance and counseling for LGBT seniors at several of the locations listed here. For more information contact Bob Martin at (858) 565-1392 or bmartin@seniorlaw-sd.org.

By working together to ensure that services are delivered in a culturally sensitive fashion, we hope to enhance the quality of care and reduce health risks for LGBT seniors.

The Toni Atkins Lesbian Health Fund was established by The Imperial Court de San Diego and The Center to assist low-income and uninsured lesbian and bisexual women in accessing necessary healthcare resources. Medicare and Healthcare Plans Discussion and Help

Confused about Medicare? Having trouble understanding your Health Plan? Volunteer Glen Flint will share his health plan knowledge while educating and empowering participants with respect to their Medicare and health plans. He can also help with or refer you for assistance in filling out confusing and lengthy Medicare claim forms and other paperwork, as well as share information on how the various health plans work.
