San Diego Mental Health Community Conversation

Please join The San Diego LGBT Community Center (The Center), Disability Rights California (DRC), and the California Pan-Ethnic Health Network (CPEHN) as we gather in San Diego for a community conversation on recent mental health policy changes.

Date: Thursday, May 30th
Time: 4:00PM – 7:00PM
Location: The San Diego LGBT Community Center, 3909 Centre St, San Diego, CA 92103

Background
California has a mental health and housing crisis. Instead of fully funding housing and services and programs that truly heal in every neighborhood, California is building more mental health institutions and services that historically mistreated people. The state is promising $4.4 billion will go into building more mental health care and drug or alcohol treatment. The state is also expanding the power of the court to increase the number of people in the system, such as locked facilities and mental hospitals. We are worried about the impact of these policies in our communities long-term. We aim to listen to people’s concerns and answer questions.
Goals of the Community Conversation
In order to empower community-based organizations and the communities they serve, we aim:
  1. To educate people on the history and context behind recent mental health changes (e.g. CARE Court, SB 43, and changes to the Mental Health Services Act) through racial equity and disability and LGBTQIA+ justice lenses.
  2. To connect and build relationships and power in order for people to protect themselves, their families, their communities, and the programs and services that matter. This includes knowing your rights, knowing what works for you and your community.
We hope you can join us for this critical and timely conversation!
