PAYING FOR PREP
If your insurance offers some coverage but you have a co-pay:
Gilead Co-Pay Coupon Card – www.gileadcopay.com or call 1.877.505.6986
• Intended for those with insurance but with high co-pays
• Can be used for up to 12 co-pays within 12 months for the length of enrollment
• Card is not valid for prescriptions eligible to be reimbursed in whole or part by Medicare, Medicaid, any other federal or state-funded healthcare benefit program, by private plans, or other health or pharmacy benefit programs that reimburse you for the entire cost of your prescription drugs
• Program currently scheduled to expire December 31, 2015 – may be extended
If your monthly, out-of-pocket cost is being quoted at approximately $1400/month for PrEP:
This may mean that you have not met your deductible, your insurance company does not cover PrEP, or that prior authorization is required.
• What is a deductible?
The amount you pay for health care services before your health insurance begins to pay.
• What is prior authorization?
Prior authorization means that a request must be submitted and approved in advance before your insurance company will pay for a medication.
• How do I know if I need a prior authorization?
Contact your insurance company or pharmacist to find out.
• How do I get prior authorization?
Your prescriber must request the prior authorization. Your pharmacist can support you in coordinating with the prescribing office and checking on the status of your authorization.
• Does prior authorization guarantee that my Truvada® will be approved?
No. Even if you do everything right, the insurance company may still refuse to cover your medicine. In the end, the insurance company is the one making the decision. Gilead personnel will partner with you to contact your insurance company in order to help you understand/navigate your coverage through the Medication Assistance Program line 1.855.330.5479.
• What do I do if prior authorization does not work? There is hope. If you have exhausted all avenues listed above, and the cost of accessing PrEP is still too high, Gilead may be able to help.
If none of the above options work:
Truvada® for PrEP Medication Assistance Program
• Must not have insurance or have an insurance that does not cover Truvada®.
• Application required including documenting proof of residency, proof of income, prescriber info, prescription and HIPAA.
• Must also make less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.
• Will cover 90 days of medication during Medi-Cal application process. If Medi-Cal is denied or not yet approved after 90 days, access will be extended to 6 months.
• Call 1.855.330.5479, Monday through Friday between 9am and 8pm EST.
Special Exception
If all of the listed options have been exhausted without success, a written request for a “special exception” can be submitted as a part of an “appeals process.” This letter can be submitted with the Medication Assistance Program application and should include:
• A description of why you need assistance andamount of time that assistance is needed.
• A list of all monthly expenses (no expense is too small).
• Whether or not you are currently on PrEP and if so, how has it been covered? It is important to note whether you are coming off of a Gilead study.
• List other medications you are taking, how they are being paid for, generic vs. name brand.
• Maximum approval for a special exception is 6 months, after which you must re-apply. Special exceptions are not intended to be a sustainable solution. Explore an insurance option that works for you.
The San Diego LGBT Community Center’s LGBT-Friendly Provider List is offered as a service to the community. Listing does not constitute an endorsement by The Center or its Board or Officers. Content of the listings is provided by and represented as accurate by the listed individuals and groups.
The Center also cannot guarantee a good fit between any given provider and any given client. Therefore, the website listings are not recommendations. Instead they are information on where to start looking, since these providers have asked to be listed as LGBT-friendly. Providers will not be listed in the first two years of their licensure.
Clients are advised to research their provider choice further by, for example, interviewing the provider, researching areas of specialization, experience, and malpractice claim history, and by performing other normal due diligence in selecting someone in whom to entrust their health care.
Providers who wish to be listed may contact The Center with that request. Once their licensure has been confirmed and a short application filled out, they will be listed on the Center website.

What is Health Self-Advocacy
Health Self-Advocacy is learning how to speak up for yourself, making your own decisions about your health, and learning how to get information so that you can understand things about your health. It includes finding a healthcare provider who will understand your unique needs and support you in your healthcare decisions. It includes knowing your rights and responsibilities, problem solving, listening and learning, reaching out to others when you need help and friendship, and learning about self-determination.
Why is Self-Advocacy Important?
So that you have the knowledge needed to access appropriate health resources and are given the chance to participate in decisions that are being made about your health. It helps you to decide what is important for your own health and helps to empower you to speak up for yourself.
How Do You Self-Advocate?
- You need to decide what you want to speak up about
- You need to plan how you are going to speak up
- You need to speak up for yourself
- You need the freedom to be able to make basic choices about your life.
- You need to be given the authority to be the expert on your life. You are the one who has to live your life so you should be able to make decisions which affect you.
- You need to have support to make and achieve your goals, the final decision should be yours but it is good to have other people to help you.
- You need to be responsible for your decisions. You need to try to make the best choices and fix those that did not work.
- You need to believe you are able to do the things in your life that are not working and work towards the things that are important to you.
