September, 2025 Book Selection: Two Serious Ladies by Jane Bowles
This rare existentialist novel follows Mrs. Copperfield and Miss Goering, two women determined to live authentically and find happiness—even as their journeys descend into debauchery.
When it was first published in 1943, the book was dismissed as “senseless and silly,” “a risk to one’s sanity,” and “unseemly in its depiction of lesbianism.” Some critics even claimed “the book is about nothing.”
But don’t let that scare you! Since then, Two Serious Ladies has been widely reappraised, praised by major critics, and frequently reissued with new introductions. John Waters even calls it “the best novel ever written.” A new edition is being released this August.

October, 2025 Book Selection: Night Side of The River by Jeanette Winterson
In this collection, Winterson presents short stories and essays about what ghosts have meant to us historically and what they may mean in the future.
Ghost tours gone awry, A. I., and haunted houses! Stories written by one of the most acclaimed authors around. Just in time for Halloween. Don’t worry, we will leave the lights on!
