The Center strongly condemns President Trump’s executive order that seeks to prohibit federal funds from going to K-12 public schools that teach about racial and gender equity issues. This order is a direct attack on the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a rejection of the lived experiences of marginalized communities.
We are alarmed by the order’s directive to the attorney general to work with state and local authorities to take legal action against educators who support students’ gender identities. This is a dangerous precedent that threatens the safety and well-being of transgender and nonbinary youth, who deserve to be affirmed and supported in their educational environments.
Acknowledging the injustices and inequities of our country’s past and present is not un-American. Teaching young people about America’s history and having honest conversations about injustice and inequity makes our country stronger. Ignoring the truth about our history and the nation we live in currently does not mean that inequity and injustice will disappear.
This executive order aims to silence important conversations that are essential for fostering understanding and acceptance among our youth. Education about gender and racial equity provides students with the tools to critically examine the world around them, challenge systemic inequalities, and build a more inclusive future.

The directive to prioritize “patriotic education” further underscores the administration’s intent to promote a narrow and exclusionary view of American history and identity. This approach not only undermines the educational mission of our schools but also marginalizes the experiences and contributions of transgender and nonbinary individuals and people of color.
The Center is committed to being a reliable source of factual information for our community, including about issues that impact the most underserved among us.
Transgender and nonbinary students deserve the same safe and affirming environment that every child receives in this country. We will continue to advocate for educators, students, and families who are committed to creating inclusive and affirming environments that reflect accurate information about our history and our present moment.
