Senior Services CAC Listening Session rescheduled to September 14

Senior Services CAC Members

Dear Center Community,

Last month we announced the temporary relocation of Feeling Fit exercise classes from The Center’s auditorium. The County-funded fitness program was moved online after concerns were raised about the floors.

On Monday, we will be doing some preliminary work on the flooring project, so we are rescheduling the Senior Services Community Advisory Committee Listening Session to September 14 via Zoom. We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciate your flexibility.

Join members of the Senior Services CAC, chaired by Mikie Lochner (he/him), for updates on current initiatives, priority areas, and opportunities to provide feedback. Learn more about how the committee works, share your ideas, and help shape the future of Senior Services at The Center.

What one repair reveals about community need

Buildings often reveal what matters most by showing where they experience the greatest wear. The spaces that see the most use often tell a story about an organization’s priorities, its community, and the needs it works to address.

Every month, The Center hosts two food banks in our parking lot: a Neighborhood Food Bank on the first Tuesday of each month, and a Senior Food Bank on the fourth Tuesday.

What many people never see is the effort required to make these programs possible. Food deliveries arrive on pallets. Supplies move throughout the building. Volunteers spend hours preparing resources for distribution. The work is physical, repetitive, and essential.

Over time, that activity has placed unexpected stress on parts of the auditorium floor.

We recognize both the impact this damage has on our space and that this wear tells the story of vital programs, so we are taking the necessary steps to restore it for continued service to our community.

Food insecurity disproportionately affects seniors and LGBTQ+ community members. Demand for The Center’s food resources grew dramatically during the pandemic and remains high as many people continue to struggle with rising housing, grocery, transportation, and healthcare costs.

For many older adults especially, food insecurity is deeply connected with the need for connection, belonging, and mutual support. At The Center, we are committed to addressing these needs holistically, serving as both a gathering place and a service provider. A visit to a food distribution program may also provide an opportunity to connect with friends, learn about resources, and reduce social isolation.

As demand for these services continues to grow and federal reductions to healthcare and food assistance programs increase pressure on local support systems, we will continue to support our community—and our auditorium is an essential hub for that support. The same auditorium that hosts exercise classes and support groups also serves as a staging ground for food distributions, holiday meals, volunteer projects, and emergency assistance.

This community space has hosted thousands of community interactions, countless volunteer hours, and years of ensuring that people facing isolation, hunger, or hardship had a place to turn. Protecting this space is vital to sustaining our mission. While these floor repairs will take time to complete, we are moving as quickly as possible to ensure that it can continue to serve our community for years to come.

We apologize for any inconvenience, as well as any future inconvenience the work to fix our floors will have on programs and events. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and I hope you can join us virtually for our Senior Services CAC Listening Session on September 14, 2026.
