Today, the Trump administration released two proposed new rules from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services: one that would prohibit federal reimbursement for gender-affirming care for minors in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and another that would prohibit providers who offer gender-affirming care for minors from participating in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.
These proposals to restrict gender‑affirming care for young people are dangerous, discriminatory, and out of step with medical expertise and basic human dignity. At The Center, we stand firmly with transgender and nonbinary youth, their families, and the providers who care for them. Gender‑affirming care is medically necessary, is supported by every major medical association in the nation, and for many in our community, is life‑saving.
It’s important to note that these proposed rules are not final and do not yet carry the force of the law. California laws protecting health care for trans people also remain in full effect, and providers and health plans must continue to comply with them.
To our trans youth: You are loved. You deserve care. You deserve a future where you can thrive as your authentic self. Project TRANS at The Center and The Center’s Youth Services team are here to provide you with resources and support.
The Center will always be here for you.
