Join Us for Transgender Day of Visibility Week of Action

My name is Gaèl Urquia (they/he), Project TRANS Case Manager & Peer Support Advocate at The Center, and I’m excited to share upcoming opportunities to support our transgender and nonbinary communities during Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) Week of Action. This year, our events include Trans(Gender) 101 Training, You Better Work Resume and Cover Letter Workshop, and Strike a Pose Movie Night.

Transgender Day of Visibility Week of ActionTransgender Day of Visibility was established in 2009 by transgender activist Rachel Crandall-Crocker in response to the lack of recognition for transgender people. At the time, the only widely known trans-centered day was Transgender Day of Remembrance, which honors lives lost to anti-trans violence. TDOV was created to also celebrate the lives, joy, and resilience of transgender people who are here today, uplifting visibility, affirming identity, and empowering those who may feel unseen, even within their own communities.

During TDOV, we celebrate the strength, creativity, and leadership of trans and nonbinary people by centering their voices and lived experiences. TDOV serves as a reminder that transgender, nonbinary, and gender-variant people have long been at the forefront of movements for justice and liberation.

Over the years, the LGBTQ+ movement has made important progress in uplifting transgender voices and advancing rights, wellness, and inclusion. However, these gains are increasingly under threat. Today, ongoing attacks on gender-affirming care and transgender rights from the Trump administration attempt to erase and disempower our community, fueling discrimination and causing real harm—from social exclusion and legal barriers to worsening mental health outcomes, particularly among youth. At a time when so much is at stake, it is critical that we come together in visible, active solidarity.

TDOV reminds us that visibility is not just about recognition but action. It is about affirming the dignity, humanity, and rights of transgender and nonbinary people. It is showing your support because our community needs strong, vocal comrades and committed advocates.

That is why The Center is proud to host a series of events for TDOV Week of Action. This is our time to come together, amplify transgender voices, build knowledge, and strengthen community. Whether you are part of the transgender and nonbinary community or showing up in allyship, we invite you to join us:

  • Trans(Gender) 101 Training on March 23 from 6-7pm at The Center, where attendees can gain a deeper understanding of gender identity, pronouns, inclusive language, and the transition process in this educational training led by Project TRANS and the Training Institute. RSVP: bit.ly/TG-101
  • Meet & Greet with Cecilia Chung on March 25 from 4:30-5pm. She was the first transgender woman to lead the San Francisco Human Rights Commission. Following the Meet & Greet, Cecilia will be a keynote speaker at a Keynote Conversation on the history and future of AIDS activism, hosted at The Center from 5:30-7pm. • Strike a Pose Move Night on March 27 from 6-8pm at The Center. Join Project TRANS, Black Services, and Latin@x Services at The Center for a special screening in honor of TDOV. RSVP: bit.ly/tdov-movie-2026

Transgender Day of EmpowermentOn April 3, join us for the Trans Day of Empowerment at The Center. This annual event begins at 3:30pm with a march from the Hillcrest sign to The Center, followed by a program in The Center’s auditorium from 5-7pm that includes impactful speakers and intentional gathering. Led by community advocate and trans elder Tracie Jada O’Brien (she/her), this event celebrates trans resilience, joy, and power.

We are currently seeking volunteers to help with the event and local artists to participate in the community gallery, which you can sign up for on our website.

These gatherings, including TDOV and Trans Day of Empowerment, reflect the strength, care, and collective action that define our community. Trans and nonbinary people continue to face significant challenges as political targets, but together, we can meet this moment with strength and care.

I hope you will join us for TDOV Week of Action and continue to show up, whether as a member of our beautiful trans community or as an ally in this movement, staying engaged, informed, and committed to supporting us.

With appreciation,

Gaèl Urquia (they/he)
